Formit with PHP8

I’m sorry this is vague but…
I upgraded a site from 2.6.5 to 2.8.4 and all went relatively smoothly - some smarty errors and the odd error with a snippet that was solved by reinstalling the snippet.
When I change to PHP8 or PHP8.1 Formit will not send. QuickEmail snippet will produce nothing. On hitting ‘send’ with a Formit form, the site hangs and throws a 500 error. Nothing in the error logs. It displays the url correctly ie. www.mysitedotcom but with the 500 error. It also tells me the site is not secure - when looking at the cookies some are served from mysitedotcom and others from www.mysitedotcom. Both are covered by SSL. I switch back to PHP7.4 and the form sends and QuickEmail snippet returns as Successful. I now have an error in the log…

Did you only check the MODX error log or also the PHP error log?

Nothing in the Modx error log. The cpanel error log is showing nothing but finding the actual log files is proving to be difficult as the client has around 20 domains each with a load of subdomains. Like a needle in a haystack.

I don’t see anything useful in this log.

Just to make sure this is not the problem: If you create a snippet with this code

<?php
return escapeshellarg('test@domain.com');

and execute it on a page, does this also generate a 500 error?

Also maybe try sending the email with SMTP to avoid that this function is used.

Yes that generates a 500 error in PHP8 but not in PHP7.4

Sending the form via SMTP works in both 7.4 and 8. No errors.

As a separate issue I also found that using [[~[[++site_start]]]] within a Wayfinder template threw out loads of errors.

It looks like the code tries to extract TV placeholders from the Wayfinder template by searching for tags with [[+...]] which also includes system settings tags.

It should be possible to fix this by changing this line in the code

Thank you - I’ll try that when I upgrade the next site. I fixed it on the current site by changing the link to use the resource id. Don’t want to revisit that site again for now if I can help it!
