Why is it required to clean the cache and logout all users before performing a backup?

I’ve read this somewhere a while ago, but what happens if I make a backup without following the steps above ?

P.S Sorry if my question is a bit dumb, but I’ve always wondered why.

Skipping this step is often harmless, but there could be changes in the new version that would cause trouble with the stuff left over in the cache or cookies.

BTW, if you upgrade using UpgradeMODX, it will take care of that for you.
